How Septic Systems Work in Wilson County & South Texas

Standard In-Ground Septic Systems (Conventional)
  1. Waste Leaves Your Home
Water from toilets, showers, and sinks flows into an underground septic tank.
  2. Separation Happens
Solids sink to the bottom, grease floats to the top, and clearer water (called effluent) flows out.
  3. Drain Field Filters It
The effluent moves into a gravel-lined drain field, where soil and natural bacteria filter it as it sinks into the ground.
*This works best when the soil is sandy or absorbent.
Aerobic Septic Systems
  1. Air is Pumped In
Unlike regular tanks, aerobic systems use oxygen to help break down waste faster — like a small treatment plant in your yard.
  2. Multiple Chambers Clean the Water
Waste passes through treatment stages including aeration and chlorination.
  3. Treated Water is Sprayed Out
Cleaned water is sprayed into your yard using sprinkler heads or drip lines.
*These are common in Wilson County and other parts of South Texas where soil doesn't drain well.
